VERNON, CT — An awning has been installed at the main entrance to Vernon Town Hall to protect visitors during the winter.

The awning adds another unique twist to the year 2020 and it's the creative handy work of a Department of Public Works crew, Vernon Town Administrator Michael Purcaro said.

The main entrance at the front of Town Hall is traditionally closed off during the winter months because the high and steeply pitched roof leaves the front of the 1800s building vulnerable to falling ice and snow, particularly when the sun hits the front side.

In 2020, the rear entrance has been off limits, because of coronavirus restrictions and only special circumstances dictate the use of the doorway. The DPW thus constructed a protective vestibule inside the main entrance that adheres to virus safety protocols.

The DPW added the protective awning late last week.
