Truck Fire Causes Traffic Snarls In Vernon Friday Morning

A smoking tractor-trailer made a mess of the morning commute in Vernon Friday.

VERNON, CT — A truck fire on Interstate-84 wreaked havoc with Friday Morning traffic in Vernon.

The crash took place at about 7:15 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway. That side of I-84 was closed almost immediately.

A truck was visibly smoking near the busy Exit 64-65 interchange. Vernon firefighters and state police were diligently working at the scene.

Detoured traffic prompted many local motorists to sneak onto back roads while bringing students to both Rockville High School and Vernon Center Middle School.

Traffic was still congested 45 minutes lated and trucks were sneaking onto Center Road, on which they are discouraged from using. That was causing even more congestion during Center Road School's drop-off time.

The state Department of Transportation turned off its traffic camera at the location at about 8:25 a.m., a telltale sign that the accident was serious.

State police said two trucks collided.

The traffic was still backed up into monster at 3:15 p.m., according to a local motorist who texted Patch. One lane was open, another said.
