VERNON, CT — Businesses in a busy Vernon shopping plaza survived a fire scare Monday evening and came out of the incident relatively unscathed, the town's deputy fire marshal said.

The initial fire call at 77 East St. was reported at about 7 p.m. That's the strip plaza located at the corner of East St. and Route 30 in the Lafayette section of Vernon.

As firefighters arrived at the scene, they noticed smoke pouring out out of The Usual Place Laundromat. Deputy fire marshal Chris Wilcox said the incident was contained to a dryer and featured more smoke than flames.

It was quickly under control, Wilcox said.

A popular Chinese restaurant next door to the left was not affected, nor was the Medicine Shoppe location to the right.

A food store is next to the Chinese place at the far left of the plaza and the future home of the Lucky Taco is at the far right.

The schedule at Northeast School, subject to a, tricky one-way road near the plaza at drop-off time, was not altered.
