VERNON, CT — Education officials in Vernon are "rewarding" students, faculty and staff members with a snow day Thursday.

Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary made the announcement at 2 p.m. Wednesday as schools began dismissing students.

"We've decided to not have a remote learning day and go with a traditional snow day," Macary said about Thursday's schedule. "We've completed 73 days of school and the community, the students the staff and the faculty have done a fantastic job."

Macary continued, "We're all in this together and the schools are a reflection of the community. We're all stressed out and this is a way to take a break."

Friday will be a remote learning day, Macary said. That means classes will not be staged in-person until after the holiday break. Macary said Monday that schools will go to remote status next week through the break. See more on that announcement here.

The long break will also give crews a chance to work on damage to the lower level at Center Road School sustained over the weekend when a water main burst. See more on the incident here.
