Work Starts Early On Rockville High School Artificial Turf Field
Work has begun on a new field and track facility in Vernon.

VERNON, CT — Work has started early on a new artificial turf field at Rockville High School.
The turf field is slated to replace the natural grass playing surface at the RHS stadium. A new track and field surface is also being installed.
Work was not supposed to begin until June 1, but because the last event at the field was a track meet Wednesday, crews began tilling and grading the field Thursday, RHS Athletic Director Jeff Farrell said.

The goal is to have the field ready by Sept. 1, according to Vernon Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary.
The total cost of the complex is $1,549,171 and the bills would be paid in two parts. A total of $1,129,462 would be taken out of the capital non-recurring fund for education for a Field Turf surface and maintenance plan, Purcaro said.

The balance — $419,709 for a new track and field surface — will come from the general fund.
The aging track complex is overdue for resurfacing, Macary said.
The expenditure was approved at a town meeting.
Macary said the artificial surface would add 30 to 35 days of usage to the complex because of fewer drainage and weather-related issues.
