Obituary: John William Zakowski, 84, of Wallingford
John, an avid poker player and proud U.S. Marine, served as a supervisor at Ulbrich Steel for 42 years.

WALLINGFORD, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) John William Zakowski, 84, of Wallingford, died peacefully on Sunday, June 20th after a brief illness.
He was the beloved husband of Karen Zakowski (neé Collins) of 57 years and is also survived by, his sons, John Zakowski, Jr. and Joseph Wayne Zakowski; his daughter in law, Cynthia Zakowski (neé Profeld); his grandchildren, Illy Catherine and Emmy Genevieve; his brother, Edward Zakowski and his wife, Patricia; his sister, Barbara Small (neé Decowski) and her husband, George; and his nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Winifred Zakowski, and by his baby grandson, William John Zakowski.
He was born in Amsterdam, NY, a son of the late William and Genevieve Zakowski (neé Nejfak) and was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean War.
John was employed as a supervisor at Ulbrich Steel for 42 years, until his retirement, and was a faithful parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection. He loved going to the movies, playing poker and doing crossword puzzles.
His family will receive relatives and friends at Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., on Thursday, June 24th from 4 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 25th at 10 AM at the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Rd., Wallingford.
Interment with military honors will follow at St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. A livestream of John’s funeral services will be available on his online obituary page located at www.wallingfordfh.com on Friday starting at 10 AM.
