Wallingford Coronavirus Update: Cases Drop At Nursing Homes

Unlike the beginning of the pandemic, the majority of recent coronavirus cases in Wallingford are among community members, officials said.

WALLINGFORD, CT — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases at nursing homes in Wallingford have dropped significantly since the beginning of the pandemic. The majority of the recent cases in town are among community members, according to data from the town’s health department.

Health Director Stephen A. Civitelli provided a coronavirus update to the Town Council during Tuesday night’s meeting. There have been 544 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Wallingford, as of Sept. 21, including 228 cases at nursing homes to account of 42 percent of the town’s overall cases.

There have been only two nursing home cases since June. Civitelli reported the following monthly breakdown of confirmed cases in Wallingford:

  • June - 24 Confirmed Cases (23 Community, 1 Nursing Home)
  • July - 18 Confirmed Cases (18 Community)
  • August – 14 Confirmed Cases – (14 Community)
  • September – 17 Confirmed Cases (16 Community and 1 Nursing Home)

Of the 70 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Wallingford, 68 have been at long-term care facilities, according to Civitelli. There have been no COVID-19 deaths reported in Wallingford since the week of July 9, Civitelli said.

Over the course of the pandemic, 9,679 people in Wallingford have been tested for the virus (representing 21 percent of the town’s total population) and 1.19 percent of the total population tested positive for COVID-19, according to Civitelli.

More than 21,000 of the tests conducted were negative (multiple tests were done per person).

The seven-day rolling average for Wallingford (45,000 population) is currently one case per day for the week ending on Sept. 21, according to Civitelli. The seven-day rolling average for New Haven County is an average of three cases per day.

The seven-day rolling average at peak of community cases in April was 4.35 cases per day based on a population of 45,000, according to Civitelli.

Health officials are conducting contact tracing and monitoring 10 people with 13 contacts for a 10-day window as of Sept. 21.
