Ken Liu presents at Waterford Library

Favorite author, graduate of Waterford High, returns home

On Saturday, April 2, 2016, the Waterford Library proudly welcomed home Ken Liu, one of the most famous graduate authors from Waterford High School. Faculty members from 1990-1994, who taught Ken, can be justifiably proud of the success he has achieved. His translation of The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015. His fantasy novel The Grace of Kings, the first of a trilogy, has also been received with great acclaim. His newest book of short stories, Paper Menagerie and Other Stories is not to be missed. Paper Menagerie is the only short story to win the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards.

In the melancholy moments when teachers are wondering “Is anyone listening?”-there is Ken. Not only was he listening and absorbing everything, he was able to take every course and weave it into a unique, complex tapestry. In his works are the echoes of Chemistry, Physics, Technology, Languages, History and English-integrated in a way that we teachers can only dream about.

Ken’s presentation was a well-thought out and organized selection of excerpts from his work, combined with a delightful, self-deprecating sense of humor. He is a dazzling author, translator, programmer, lawyer, son, husband and father. He gives new meaning to the phrase-A True Renaissance Man! Treat yourself to his new short story book. You won’t be disappointed.
