Razor Blades, THC Gummies Found In CT Halloween Candy Bags

Razor blades and THC-laden gummies were handed out to trick-or-treating kids in two Connecticut towns, authorities said.

CONNECTICUT — Police in two Connecticut towns said razor blades and THC-laden gummies were found in some Halloween bags. The parents of trick-or-treaters in Waterford and Waterbury had a fright when they found their kids' candy bags contained the dangerous "treats." None of the children were injured and none ingested the gummies.

Police in Waterford were called late Thursday after parents inspecting candy bags found two packages of gummies with the label "Shake and Baked." The bags contained 10 small colorful gummy cubes each packed with 10 milligrams of THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.

The gummies are both illegal and dangerous, especially to kids, authorities said. Ingestion can cause serious effects such as intoxication, altered perception, anxiety, panic, paranoia, dizziness, apnea, and heart problems.

Police said two bags were recovered and it’s not clear if any more were given out. Police said parents inspected the candy and came across the packages before the kids had eaten any. Police said the kids had been trick-or-treating in the Gallup Lane area in Waterford. Police said they don’t know if the THC-laden candies were "intentionally handed out or was an unintentional oversight by the owner," but don’t believe it was a targeted act.

Meanwhile, across the state in Waterbury, a man charged with putting razor blades in candy bags claims he didn’t mean to do it. Jason Racz, 37, told police he didn't know how the blades ended up in some kids' candy bags.

Police said parents found the razor blades in their kids' bags after they went trick-or-treating in the Horseshoe Drive neighborhood. Racz reportedly said he can’t explain how the blades ended up getting distributed. A 3-year-old was at his home and had access to a box of razor blades, according to reports.

Two mothers took to Facebook to warn others. Shakira Santiago wrote that while trick-or-treating in the Hopeville neighborhood of Waterbury, she found two razor blades in her son's candy basket.

"I feel like going back to each house we went to, wasn’t many either. Lucky he didn’t cut his finger and I checked everything. People are so malicious."

Another mother saw the post and reported her son saw razor blades being put into a candy bag. Kristi Leigh Barbera went to the house where the blades were handed out and confronted the people there, she wrote, noting they apologized and said it was an accident. The blades had fallen into a candy bowl while decorations were being hung, they claimed. She ended up calling police.

Waterbury police said they arrested Racz, who was "non-compliant," and charged him with risk of injury to a minor, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest/ interfering with a police officer. He posted a $250,000 bond and was released. He's due back in court Nov. 13 in Waterbury.

Police asked caregivers to carefully check Halloween candy for signs of tampering or unsafe objects. Anyone with information on the Waterford incident is urged to call police at 860-442-9451.
