Waterford Heroes and Helpers Making the Season Bright

'Tis the season of giving, and these Waterford volunteers exemplify the spirit of the holidays.

“Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.” ~ Dale Evans

No one understands that sentiment more than the Waterford volunteers who donated time and resources to help make the holidays brighter for 20 children in town.

It all started with the Waterford Police Department’s application for a grant that would allow 20 children to get a $100 gift card from Target.

From there (if you’ll pardon the expression) it just snowballed.

Waterford Target donated another $500. The Datco bus company donated a bus to bring the children to the ‘Heroes and Helpers’ shopping adventure at Target. Everyone in the photo gallery donated their time, police said.

Because of the community’s generosity, 25 Waterford children were able to participate in Heroes and Helpers.

“Each kid was paired with a ‘hero’ and went shopping in the store with them as they chose what items they wanted,” the Waterford Police Department shared via Facebook. “Almost every child got something for siblings, parents, grandparents, dogs, neighbors dogs… you get the idea!”

When the children were finished shopping, Target team members, also volunteering their time, helped wrap presents and provided food for the hungry shoppers.

The Waterford Police Department, Police Benevolent Association, the Waterford Emergency Communications Union, the Waterford Professional Fire Fighters Union and Waterford Youth Services also helped make the event a success, Waterford police said.

“All in all a great day,” police wrote. “Thanks so much to everyone involved, we appreciate your generosity immensely!”
