Blue Horse Ordered Closed By West Haven Health Officials: Report

The popular restaurant and bar has been temporarily shut down by the city's health department over coronavirus violations, officials said.

WEST HAVEN, CT — The Blue Horse restaurant in West Haven has been temporarily shut down by the city’s health department, which said it has been operating as a bar in violation of the state’s coronavirus regulations, according to the New Haven Register.

The Register reports the Blue Horse, at 703 Campbell Ave., was also recently fined $500 for holding a karaoke event in violation of the state’s COVID-19 protocols.

Blue Horse owner Bob Severino told the Register he believes he is being targeted by the health department because they blame him for the spike in coronavirus cases at the University of New Haven. Severino is also accused of failing to provide health officials with details of a now-canceled Halloween party that was scheduled for Saturday, according to the Register.

Severino, who previously co-owned the Side Street Grille in Hamden near Quinnipiac University, opened the Blue Horse in 2019 with his wife Tara Severino. They said at the time that it was important for them to open near UNH after seeing the students “didn’t have their own place.”

The Blue Horse has several food items listed on its menu, including wings, burgers, sandwiches and fries. It also has several items catering to the college crowd, listed under “Broke College Kids,” such as boxed cereal, Spaghetti O’s, Ramen noodles, fluffernutters and Nutella on French toast.
