The National Weather Service said Tuesday morning that it’s becoming more likely that there will be “plowable snow” on Thursday for Connecticut. It appears this storm will be a reversal of past storms this winter in that areas closest to the coast will see the most snow.
A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for the entire state for the likelihood of snow on Thursday and the National Weather Service has made its initial snow accumulation estimates.

Before we get to Thursday’s snow, the state was dealing with a period of ice that resulted in the cancellation and delays of hundreds of schools Tuesday morning. Most areas that saw a period of ice are now receiving just plain rain. But northern areas of the state will see a longer period of mixed precipitation, the National Weather Service states.
A Winter Weather Advisory is still in effect for Hartford and Tolland counties until 7 p.m. tonight as freezing rain and snow could accumulate up to 1 inch. Snow and freezing rain develops by 9 a.m. and changes to plain rain this afternoon. Travel may be slippery this morning, especially during the end of the morning rush hour.

Initial snow accumulation estimates for Thursday’s snow via the National Weather Service:
The immediate Connecticut coast from Greenwich to New London:
Snow accumulation of up to 6 inches is likely for much of the area, the weather service states. 1-3 inches is expected Wednesday night as snow develops around midnight and another 3-5 inches of snow on Thursday morning. Snow ends by 1 p.m. Thursday.
Inland areas of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties:
In these areas, there is also the possibility for 6 or more inches of snow accumulation, but it’s a bit less certain than for areas along the immediate coast. A total of 1-3 inches of snow is expected late Wednesday and 3-5 inches more on Thursday. Again the snow, ends around 1 p.m. Thursday.
Hartford and Tolland counties:
In northern Connecticut there is a “low to moderate risk that winter weather advisories may be needed for accumulating snow on Thursday.” Winter weather advisories are issued when there is a chance for up to a few inches of snow.
Snow is expected after 10 p.m. Wednesday but only a half inch of accumulation is expected. Snow lasts until 10 a.m. Thursday.
