West Haven Couple Celebrating 70th Wedding Anniversary
William McCarthy thought he was stood up when Dorothy didn't show up to the church on time on their wedding day… the rest is history.
WEST HAVEN, CT — A flat tire my have delayed the vows, but the rest is history — a love story lasting more than 40 years.
William and Dorothy McCarthy will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on Jan. 14. They were married in 1950 at St. Paul’s Church in West Haven.
Dorothy, a lifelong West Haven resident, says that the secret to a long marriage is having a loving close family supporting each other through life. William McCarthy says on their wedding day he thought he got stood up when his wife to be didn’t show up at the church on time. He found out later that the car that Dorothy’s grandfather was driving her in had a flat tire.

The ceremony was just delayed and the rest is history — a love story lasting over 70 years. The couple owned a local clothing store called “Casual Den” for more than 25 years in downtown West Haven.
William McCarthy is 91 and Dorothy McCarthy is 88. The McCarthy’s have five children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
