West Haven Man Charged With DUI After Hitting Pedestrian: PD

NEW HAVEN, CT —Tuesday afternoon, a drunk driver struck and injured a Hamden woman crossing Chapel Street in downtown New Haven, police said. The 31-year-old woman was lying bloodied in the street when officers arrived at the intersection of Chapel and High streets, police said. She suffered head and internal injuries, police said. The woman was hospitalized in stable condition.

New Haven police said Robert H. Stallings, Jr., 66, failed a field sobriety test after striking the woman in his "full-size Chevy Silverado pickup truck."

According to police, Stallings was traveling in the right lane of two westbound Chapel Street lanes, when he approached the intersection at High Street and faced a temporary stop sign in the middle of the two lanes; regular overhead traffic control signals and pedestrian crosswalk signals were inoperable.

Police said Stallings drove through the intersection and the truck's front passenger side hit the woman. Stallings stayed on scene, police said, and then failed the sobriety test and was arrested.

Stallings was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to stop for the stop sign. He's due in Superior Court June 1.
