Coral Gables Park Named After Commissioner Jim Barker

Barker oversaw the renovation of the Youth Center and helped establish a scholarship fund for economically disadvantaged students.

The Coral Gables City Commission approved yesterday the naming of the City-owned property at 1047 Venetia Avenue as “James T. Barker Park.” Commissioner Barker served on the City Commission where he was elected to three consecutive four-year terms ending in 2001. He oversaw the renovation of the Youth Center and helped establish the Dr. Donald R. Hopkins/William A. Cooper Scholarship Fund to assist economically disadvantaged Coral Gables High School seniors with their college education.

He was actively involved in numerous organizations and worked tirelessly on behalf of the Coral Gables community. Born in Valdosta, Georgia, he moved to Florida when he was a year old. Commissioner Barker passed away in November of 2015.
