Sunshine State Not So Sunny For Working Dads: Study

With Father's Day on Sunday, a new study ranked Florida near the bottom of U.S. states when it comes to the best places for working dads.

CORAL GABLES, FL — With Father's Day on Sunday, a new study ranked Florida near the bottom of U.S. states when it comes to the best places for working dads. Personal finance website WalletHub compared the length of the work day, child-care costs and the percentage of men in good or better health among other factors. Florida ranked 36th overall.

"Fatherhood is a responsibility which changes over time," the website penned. "Back in 1960, 75 percent of American families relied on a single income, that of the dad, who spent much of his week at work while mom stayed home with the kids. Today, two-thirds of family households depend on two incomes."

Florida ranked 45th for economic and social well being, 24th for work life balance, 23rd for child care and 38th for health.

Citing statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the study noted that nearly 93 percent of dads with kids younger than 18 are employed.

"Regardless of the changing identity and priorities of the modern dad, fatherhood remains an undisputedly tough job. And a father’s ability to provide for his family is central to his role," according to WalletHub. "But some working dads — those who live in states with greater economic opportunity and quality of life — have it better than others."
