Dunedin Golfer Qualifies for USGA Senior Open

Rod Spittle advances to the U.S. Senior Open after qualifying in a tournament in Dunedin on Monday.

A Dunedin golfer is the top finisher in Monday’s USGA Senior Open Qualifying Tournament at Dunedin Golf Club.

Rod Spittle, a PGA professional who once competed on the Champions Tour, shot a 69 in Monday’s tournament, advancing him to the U.S. Senior Open in Omaha, NE, from July 8 to 14, airing on ESPN2 and NBC Sports.

Spittle, 57, a Canadian native, was among 84 golfers from around the world vying for a shot at the U.S. Senior Open.

Gary Koch of Tampa and Gene Jones of Orlando edged out Thomas Dawson and Tim Balmer, each shooting 70, in a four-way tie for second place.

In the playoff round, Ron Randolph, general manager of Dunedin Golf Club, said Dawson was eliminated after the first hole and Balmer bogeyed on the 13th hole, leaving Koch and Jones to qualify for Omaha.

Monday isn’t the first time Spittle has seen the U.S. Senior Open. He qualified in 2006, and did again for the past three years — 2010, 2011, 2012. This marks Spittle's fourth consecutive U.S. Senior Open, according to his official website.

Spittle is a full-time resident of Ohio, and is a member of Dunedin Golf Club, Randolph said.
