Largo To Kick Off 2020 Sustainability Series Jan. 21

LARGO, FL — The City of Largo will host its 2020 Sustainability Series on the last Tuesday of each month at the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The series is an opportunity to meet other residents and professionals interested in sustainability and learn how it can make an impact on the community.

Presenter: Suncoast Sierra Club

Are you interested in the benefits of going solar? Do you want to lower your utility bill and help Largo achieve its goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2050? Join the City of Largo and the Sierra Club for the next Sustainability Series Event for a discussion about the strategies of gong solar, what to expect during the process, and how we can transform our community.

Feb. 25: Keep Largo Beautiful

Presenter: Keep Pinellas Beautiful and #TrashTagTampaBay

Bring your friends and family to learn about keeping our community and wildlife healthy with Keep Pinellas Beautiful and #TrashTagTampaBay. This presentation will cover recent clean-up efforts, recycling campaigns, zero-waste efforts and the need to reduce our use of single-use plastics!

March 31: Healthy Waterways in Your Community

Presenter: Chris Benigni, Stormwater Program Administrator

City of Largo Stormwater pollution can lead to toxic algae blooms and other conditions that cause public health and environment issues. Come learn about your local watershed, your individual connection to it and how we can all make changes that improve our direct impact on our beautiful waterways.

April 28: Managing Food Waste

Presenter: Ramona Madhosingh-Hector, Sustainability Extension Agent, UF Extension Agency

Everyone from chefs to consumers are looking for ways to cut food waste, and this presentation will help you keep those scraps out of the trash. Composting, water consumption, meal planning, food storage and more will be covered as we learn about how our diets impact the environment. Plus, learn money saving tips that help reduce the amount of food tossed in the trash.

May 26: Sustainability in Pinellas County

Presenter: Hank Hodde, Sustainability Coordinator, Pinellas County

Join us for an event focused on sustainable living in our community and learn about a number of topics from the future of energy to affordable house in the context of an ever-changing world. This community conversation will explore innovative and collaborative efforts that will help make our future Largo sustainable for generations.

June 30: Get Wild- Meet Educational Wildlife

Presenter: Donna Vitale, Nature Program Supervisor, City of Largo

You’re invited to take a walk on the wild side and meet some of Largo’s most entertaining residents- our animals from McGough Nature Park. Join us at the Largo Public Library to see a variety of educational wildlife and learn about their habits and habitats and how we can play a role in keeping them safe and healthy.

July 28: Planning for our Sustainable Future

Presenter: Katrina Lunan-Gordon, City Planner, City of LargoLargo’s planning services include fostering a distinctive, well planned, safe, attractive and sustainable community. Learn about efforts to foster a community where opportunities exist for residents and businesses to realize their full potential. Join the conversation and discuss community development, long-range planning, and other efforts that help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, create a more walkable community and build resilient capacity.

Aug. 25: Addressing Climate Change

Presenter: Laura Thomas, Sustainability Administrator, City of Largo

Hear about some of the latest updates in climate science and how they are already impacting our community. Learn about topics from sea level rise to heat island effect, how they can change our community, and ways we can all take action to help reduce their impact.

Sept. 29: Planting Trees, Growing Communities

Presenter: Phil Christmas, Parks Superintendent, City of Largo

Join us to discuss techniques to keep your trees healthy, basics of care, and how even one single tree can impact our community and be sure to bring questions about when, where, and how to plant your next tree! Our urban tree canopy and efforts to plant more trees in more parts of our community are helping to create a more sustainable future for generations.

Oct. 27: Largo Recycles Right

Presenter: Laura Thomas, Sustainability Administrator, City of Largo

Are you recycling right? Join us to explore the world of recycling and waste and hear tips on how to reduce contamination in the recycling cart. Bring your questions or even you items to find out if they can be recycled or not.
