Take a Cybervacation with Your Kids
Summer is a great time for learning and family fun on the internet

According to Bill Proudfoot, author of Summer, Ideas and the Internet,
“Summer may be a time away from formal classroom learning, and
may be a bit trying on parents’ nerves as the weeks grow long, but

them plan their browsing so as to take advantage of the opportunities
to expand their horizon, but don’t forget to leave some time for the
surprises brought by serendipity on the Net.”
As you plan your summer family fun on the Internet keep in mind
the following:
First, recognize the value of spending time on the Internet with
your child.
Proudfoot observed: “If your child is fortunate enough to have access
to the Internet, you should be sure they take advantage of that in their
summer plans. With some creative thinking, parents can encourage
their kids to use the Net to learn, expand their view of the world,
practice critical thinking skills, and have fun at the same time.”
Second, take an adventure in cyberspace. The whole world is
available on the Internet. Instead of using a car or plane to reach your
destination, you can use the Internet. Take a tour of the Smithsonian
Air and Space Museum (http://www.nasm.si.edu). Click on the online
only exhibit- it highlights events in air and space history including
archival photos, documents, video and audio. Take a free trip to the
zoo by visiting (https://nationalzoo,si.edu) or learn about history
science, space, and geography with amazing pictures and fun games
at: (https://kids.nationalgeographic.com).
Third, don’t overlook local cyberadventure opportunities.

Tracy Barr, author of Personal Computers for Kids and Parents
concluded: “Of all the fun and practical stuff you can do with
your home computer, the most exciting thing is kicking your modem
into gear and jumping onto the World Wide Web."
