2017 Sarasota Highland Games: What To Know Before You Go

The 23rd Annual Highland Games features the best of Scottish and Celtic heritage.

SARASOTA, FL – Once again, the sounds of bagpipes and the excitement of caber tossing will take over the Sarasota Fairgrounds.

The 23rd Annual Sarasota Highland Games will celebrate all things Scottish for people of all ages, with live entertainment, athletics and regional foods.

Here’s what area residents need to know before you go to the 2017 Sarasota Highland Games:

Date and Time

The 2017 Sarasota Highland Games will take place on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Location

  • All events will take place at the Sarasota Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd in Sarasota.

Admission

Tickets will be available at the gate for $15.

Athletics

Men and women from the attending clans will compete in the following athletic events:

  • Open stone throw
  • Heavyweight for distance throw
  • Light weight for distance throw
  • Scottish hammer throw
  • Caber toss
  • Sheaf toss
  • Weight for height
  • The Braemar stone throw (time permitting)

Schedule of Events

The schedule of events for the 2017 Sarasota Highland Games is:

The Scottish Heritage Stage (Downs Building)

  • 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: Sarasota Highland Feis Irish dance competition

Main Field

  • 10 a.m.: Craigmalloch border collies
  • Noon: Opening ceremonies
  • 12:30 p.m.: Craigmalloch border collies
  • 1:30 p.m.: Mass Pipe Band competition
  • 4 p.m.: Closing ceremonies

Scottish Heritage Society Beer Tent

  • 10 a.m.: Bobby/Vesey/Mike Hickmont, Ballads and Bodhrans
  • 12:30 p.m.: Celtic Conundrum
  • 1:30 p.m.: Brendon Nolan
  • 2:30 p.m.: Tarboltin
