Book Drive and Free Event Make Reading “S’more Fun"

Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida are sponsoring a children's book drive to culminate with a free family event on May 1

The Library Foundation for Sarasota County and Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida are joining forces to promote philanthropy and the joy of reading, in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s 2018 Giving Challenge.

The Girl Scout council, with support from local Girl Scout troops and volunteers, are spearheading a community book drive from now through May 1. The goal is to collect new and gently used books appropriate for various ages, from pre-k to young adult, to be donated to the Sarasota County Library System and their program partners.

The theme for their Giving Challenge partnership, “Be The One! Make Reading S’more Fun,” reflects the Girl Scouts’ and Library Foundation’s common goal: make reading resources available to children of all ages and backgrounds, to help them learn the joy of reading. Books may be dropped off at Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida’s council headquarters, 4780 Cattlemen Road in Sarasota, between 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays.

The book drive will culminate with a community event, “Campfire Stories,” on Tuesday, May 1 from 4-7 p.m. at the Gulfcoast Event and Conference Center, adjacent to the council office. The free event will feature children’s book readings, craft activities, refreshments, and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring a book to donate.

“Campfire Stories” coincides with the 2018 Giving Challenge, a 24-hour giving event supporting more than 625 nonprofits serving Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties, May 1-2 from noon to noon.
