Florida Coronavirus Update: 98 New Deaths, 3,190 More Cases

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 98 new deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday and another 3,190 confirmed new cases of the virus.

Twenty-four of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Saturday, including Bay, Brevard, Broward, Citrus, Clay, Miami-Dade, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Marion, Martin, Nassau, Okeechobee, Orange, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Polk, Santa Rosa, Sarasota, Suwannee, Union and Volusia.

Saturday's total compares to 176 new deaths Friday, 211 new deaths Thursday, 200 new deaths Wednesday, 44 new deaths Tuesday, 22 new deaths Monday, 38 new deaths Sunday and 61 new deaths last Saturday.

The total number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Florida rose to 661,571 Saturday, up from 658,381 a day earlier.

Florida's numbers compare to 756,181 cases and 14,27 deaths in California; 675,322 cases and 14,228 deaths in Texas as well as 443,640 cases and 33,023 deaths in New York, according to information compiled by Johns Hopkins.

Florida health officials reported the state's 31st day of daily positivity under 10 percent. The daily positivity rate is calculated by taking the number of people who test PCR-or antigen-positive for the first time divided by all the people tested that day, excluding people who have previously tested positive.

Florida's overall positivity rate, which is cumulative, was at 13.48 percent as of Saturday based on 4,908,723 total tests.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 163,790 cases of the virus and 2,882 deaths as of Saturday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 74,273 cases and 1,279deaths. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 43,873cases and 1,196 deaths.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 39,298 cases of the virus and 585 deaths while Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 37,846 cases and 409 deaths.

Sarasota County, which includes the city of Sarasota, reported 7,585 cases of the virus and 233 deaths. Manatee County, which includes Bradenton, reported 10,868 cases and 275 deaths. Pinellas County reported 20,872 cases of the virus and 701 deaths while Pasco County reported 8,507 cases and 195 deaths. Polk County, which includes Lakeland, reported 18,337 cases of the virus and 488 deaths.

The total number of deaths in Florida rose to 12,600 Saturday, up from 12,502 a day earlier. Florida's most recent one-day record of 276 reported deaths was set on Aug. 11. Health officials reported another 156 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida.

The state reported 41,215 hospitalizations, up from 41,021 hospitalizations a day earlier. That represents an increase of 194 new hospitalizations over the previous day.

State health officials also reported a total of 2,683 current hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, down from 2,816 current hospitalizations a day earlier.
