Giving it a Tri! UnitedHealthcare Partners with BankUnited to Support 12 Employees as they Train for a Triathlon

Health provider-client pilot program takes corporate wellness to the next level

(L to R): UnitedHealthcare sponsored BankUnited employees Jean Poholsky, Valentina Londono and Tommy Rousseau demonstrated the power of commitment by successfully completing their first-ever triathlon. Due to Poholsky’s participation in the triathlon training program, she has seen her health improve, life insurance rates drop and has signed up for another triathlon in May.

In partnership with BankUnited and Life Time Endurance, UnitedHealthcare (UHC) took corporate wellness to the next level with a special sponsorship of 12 BankUnited managers and executives to participate in and train for their first-time Olympic distance triathlon. The pilot program was an extension of UHC’s title sponsorship of the South Beach Triathlon Training Program, presented by Life Time Endurance. The race, held Sun., April 3, 2016, included a .93-mile open water swim, 24.25-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run.

Coming from a variety of fitness backgrounds, the 12 BankUnited participants decided to take on the triathlon training program challenge as a way to improve their fitness and do something they always wanted or never thought possible. Encouraged and supported by BankUnited Employee Wellness Program Administrator Jeanette Martin, the participants followed a 12-week training program designed by Life Time Endurance. As part of their training, the triathlon program participants also joined other BankUnited employees at bi-weekly group training runs on the BankUnited campus as well as longer individual and group sessions on the weekends.

“It was a real testimony to each person’s commitment to accept the challenge and follow through with all the training,” said Martin. “Their collective commitment to try something new had a tremendous trickle down effect on other employees, helping grow BankUnited’s bi-weekly, after-work training runs on the campus to more than 50 people,” said Martin. “I kept hearing from other employees that if they can do it, so can I. This successful partnership with UnitedHealthcare really elevated our internal corporate wellness program and initiatives and we hope it will serve as a role model for other companies to follow,” Martin added.
