Historic Asolo Theater to Host 'My Favorite Things' May 7
Famed soloists will join the Gloria Musicae Singers for a tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein.
SARASOTA, FL – The Historic Asolo Theater will be alive with the sound of music this weekend. The Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota will present “My Favorite Things: The Music of Rodgers & Hammerstein” on Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, May 8 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The Gloria Musicae Singers, Sarasota’s professional vocal ensemble, will be joined by guest soloists Mara Bonde (soprano), Katherine Pracht (mezzo soprano), Aaron Blake (tenor) and baritone Marcus De Loach under the direction of Dr. Joseph Holt.
After distinguished careers with other collaborators, composer Richard Rodgers and librettist/lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II teamed up in 1943, penning such musicals as The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, The King and I, Carousel and South Pacific. Collectively, the team earned 34 Tony Awards, 16 Academy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize and two Grammy Awards, with many of their works still being professionally produced today.
“The names Rodgers and Hammerstein are synonymous with musical theatre and their songwriting remains the epitome of a great American art form,” Holt said. “I can’t think of a better way to conclude our 20th anniversary Pops Series than with this cast of outstanding singers paying tribute to these two musical legends.”
Tickets to the event range from $25 to $45 and are available by calling (941) 360-7399 or visiting www.artistseriesconcerts.org. Student prices are available at the door. The Historic Asolo Theater is located at 5401 Bay Shore Road in Sarasota.
