Hurricane Irma: Storm Debris Collection Rules Suspended

City of Sarasota residents will be able to set out more yard trash than normal in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

SARASOTA, FL – The City of Sarasota has suspended standard residential collection rules for storm debris in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

Sarasota Public Works crews will tour the city on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to assess pickup needs with their storm debris collection contractor, Ceres Environmental. The contractor will then organize a collection schedule and will be shared with the community.

The City of Sarasota’s standard residential rules for yard waste, which will be suspended, are:

  • No tree or palm stumps, soil and dirt, rocks and boulders, plastic bags, concrete, asphalt or painted and/or treated wood
  • Yard waste must be placed within a 45-gallon container or smaller with handles
  • Materials can be bundled and tied in 4-foot lengths or smaller and no more than 50 pounds in weight

Residents are urged to place storm debris at the curb away from mailboxes, fire hydrants, light poles and other stationary objects. Residents are also asked to not mix storm debris with other waste.
