Labor Day 2020: What's Open, Closed Around Sarasota

Monday is Labor Day which marks the traditional end of summer for most Americans though Sarasota is one of the lucky exceptions.

SARASOTA, FL — Monday is Labor Day which marks the traditional end of summer for most Americans though Sarasota is one of the lucky exceptions.

For us, it's the last of summer's big three holidays and most government and school offices will be closed in observance around Sarasota.

City of Sarasota administrative offices will be closed on Monday. There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste pickup on Monday.

Monday collection will occur on Tuesday, and Tuesday collection will occur on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday collection will not be interrupted.

There will also be no commercial garbage collection Monday. Solid Waste staff will coordinate with commercial customers to adjust their individual collections accordingly.

Hours of operation at recreation and cultural arts facilities for Sept. 5-7 will vary:

The regular city Commission meeting will be held via teleconference on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

City offices will reopen to the public on an appointment basis beginning Tuesday. City business can also be conducted online at www.SarasotaFL.gov or by phone at 941-263-6000.

Children who attend Sarasota County Schools have a day off from school on Monday. Classes resume on Tuesday.

The fireworks show over the Manatee River that was scheduled to take place on Labor Day has been postponed to avoid large gatherings

"Spectators at this event typically gather on the Green Bridge over the Manatee River and along the river on both sides," according to officials. "The size of the expected crowd would have posed a serious public-health concern."

No new date has been set. The fireworks were initially planned for July 4 but postponed until Labor Day.
