MLK Way Construction Project Set to Begin
Residents asked to find alternate routes during resurfacing.

SARASOTA, FL – Dr. MLK Jr. Way between U.S. Highway 30 and Central Avenue will be resurfaced starting Tuesday, May 17.
The project will being with the street being milled. Crews will begin at Central Avenue and head east to U.S. Highway 301, then turn around and return to Central Avenue. The actual resurfacing is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 23 and take at least one week to complete.
Two-way traffic will be maintained with one lane open intermittently. Flag people will be on site to assist with traffic control. To reduce potential traffic congestion, residents are encouraged to use alternative routes during the resurfacing project.
The repaving project is part of Sarasota’s annual citywide repaving program. Approximately 14 miles of streets will be resurfaced during 2016. The timing of the Dr. MLK Jr. Way resurfacing was coordinated to coincide with the conclusion of the Dr. MLK Jr. Way Streetscape improvement project.
The streetscape is a significant community investment with new bulb outs, trees and vegetation, brick pavers and angled on-street parking along Dr. MLK Jr. Way. Where possible the sidewalks were widened to promote a better pedestrian experience.
