Sarasota County Seeks Reading Tutors For Summer Program

The Summer Reading Camps are for third-graders who have not reached grade-level reading proficiency.

From Sarasota County Schools: Volunteer reading tutors are needed for the Sarasota County School District’s Summer Reading Camps. The camps will be at Gulf Gate and Fruitville elementary schools from June 12-July 20. Classes will meet Monday-Thursday each week from noon-1:30 p.m. The camp will be closed July 3-7.

The Summer Reading Camps are for third-graders who have not reached grade-level reading proficiency, which is required for promotion to fourth grade. Tutors will work one-on- one with the same two or three students each week, spending 30 minutes with each student.

Suzanne Naiman, the district’s reading and language arts curriculum specialist, said Summer Reading Camp provides students with effective instruction to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, but the lessons also are designed to be fun. The reading exercises cover themes that third graders enjoy, such as inventors and their inventions, space exploration and sea life.
