The annual three-week program will run June 13 to July 1.

SARASOTA, FL – The Sarasota Youth Opera’s 2016 Summer Camp is now open for enrollment for youths age 8 to 18. The deadline to register is Friday, May 13.

The annual three-week program will run Monday through Friday from June 13 to July 1 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for 8 to 10 year olds and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for 11- to 18 year olds. The camp will be held at the Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Ave. All skill levels are welcome to attend and no auditions are necessary.

The Sarasota Youth Opera hosts the summer camp to promote hands-on exploration of opera in a structured but informal atmosphere through classes in music, acting, opera appreciation, design and technical production. Campers also experience opera through field trips and art group collaboration.

This year’s camp will focus on the Sarasota Youth Opera fall production, the U.S. premiere of The Secret World of Og by Canadian composer Dean Burry. Also featured in the camp will be choral highlights from the upcoming 2016-17 Sarasota Opera season.

“Our camp’s hands-on approach with not only signing, but all aspects of opera provides a phenomenal opportunity for young performers to really explore,” said Ben Jewell-Plocher, the manager of educational opportunities for the Sarasota Youth Opera. “We are committed to placing our campers in active learning situations with established professionals in the industry: instrumentalists, stage directors, costume designers, set builders and many others.”

All sessions are led by Sarasota Opera artists, directors, instrumentalists and stage crew. The final day of the camp features an on-stage demonstration with all campers. Families are invited to participate alongside campers on the final day and attend the final demonstration.

Tuition for the program is $250 for half-day campers and $350 for full-day campers. Scholarships are available. Before and after camp care is available for a nominal fee. Campers are asked to bring their own lunches but daily snacks will be provided.
