Sarasota's Most Dangerous Intersections Selected For More Patrols

The police department has received a grant to increase pedestrian and bike safety in Sarasota.

SARASOTA, FL — Be on the lookout for more Sarasota cops on the streets — they're on a mission to make the city's roadways safer.

Four of the most dangerous intersections in Sarasota will be more heavily surveilled thanks to a new grant to the police department to increase pedestrian and bike safety.

The campaign, sponsored by Florida Department of Transportation and the University of South Florida's Center for Urban Transportation Research, will begin Nov. 15.

The increased patrols will target the top four spots in the city for crashes involving pedestrians, bicyclists and automobiles. Police will step up their presence at the following intersections:

  • Main Street (between 100 block to 2000 block)
  • Fruitville Road (from North Tamiami Trail (State Road 45) to Beneva Road)
  • North Tamiami Trail from Mound Street to University Parkway
  • North Washington Boulevard (U.S. 301) from Main Street to Myrtle Avenue

In a press release, the department said its officers "will observe, educate and enforce traffic laws in four chosen areas." They will also educate residents about traffic laws and safety.
