Two Sewage Spills Reported In Sarasota Monday

The county said no bodies of water were affected by the spills.

SARASOTA, FL — County utility crews in Sarasota responded to two sewage leaks on Monday, the county announced in a string of online posts on Tuesday.

According to the Tweets, the first leak, in the 4600 block of Hadfield Drive, was caused by a blocked line.

Crews cleared the blockage and cleaned some 1,200 gallons of sewer using vacuum and tanker trucks, the county said. All told, approximately 2,000 gallons of sewer were spilled into a grassy low spot.

The county said no bodies of water were impacted by the spill and cleanup proceeded as required by county protocol.

The second spill was reported in the 5400 block of Swift Road after a car crash. The county said a car involved in the crash came to rest on an air release valve that accessed a sewer line.

The county said the valve was destroyed in the crash and had leaked some 250 gallons of sewage into a nearby stormwater drain.

Crews were able to clean up around 200 gallons of sewer from the structure.

Like with the first, the second reported leak did not impact any bodies of water. Sampling and testing were not required.

Reports were filed with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
