The driver of the car was treated for minor injuries while the passenger died at the scene.

Two 16-year-old girls were riding in a 2008 Ford Escape in the 1300 block of 40th Avenue Northeast Friday night when the SUV lost control and crashed into the sidewalk and guardrails along the bridge to Shore Acres.
Police said Alexia Douglas, the front side passenger of the vehicle, died upon impact.

According to police, the driver became distracted and stopped looking at the roadway just before 7 p.m. Friday.Â
In that moment, the vehicle veered to the right, jumped the north curb and went up onto the sidewalk. Â

The vehicle then drove up onto the concrete barriers, which separate the roadway and the north sidewalk along the bridge. Â
Police said this caused the left side of the vehicle to become elevated while
the right side traveled along close to the sidewalk. Metal guardrails that
line the north wall of the bridge, pierced through the passenger's side
windshield.Â
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
