A renovation project in the main lobby entrance got underway July 1 and will last about eight weeks.

ST. PETE, FL — Don't let Sunken Gardens' construction project prevent you from visiting the famous attraction this summer.

A renovation project in the main lobby entrance of Sunken Gardens, 1825 4th St. N., got underway July 1 and will last about eight weeks. But a temporary entrance to Sunken Gardens has been established.

The adjacent Great Explorations Children's Museum will continue to have access through the main lobby for the majority of the project.

Access to Carrabba's Italian Grill and Southern Bay Bakery will not be affected by these improvements.

The City of St. Petersburg purchased Sunken Gardens in 1999, renovating and opening the current lobby in 2003. Penny for Pinellas Funds will be used to fund this project.

The 100-year-old Sunken Gardens, St. Petersburg's oldest living museum, is home to some of the oldest tropical plants in the region as well as a lively flock of flamingos.

Visitors can unwind as they stroll through meandering paths lush with exotic plants from around the world, explore cascading waterfalls and wander through demonstration gardens featuring more than 50,000 tropical plants and flowers.

Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors age 62 and older, and $4 for children age 2 to 11.
