Grandfather Killed, 14-Day-Old Baby Injured In Gandy Crash

A grandfather and his grandson were in a fatal crash on Gandy Boulevard in St. Petersburg Saturday afternoon, troopers said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Update: A 47-year-old grandfather was killed and his 14-day-old grandchild had minor injuries when they were thrown from a car in a crash with an SUV on Gandy Boulevard westbound west of Oak Street Northeast, Florida Highway Patrol said.

The left tire of an SUV driven by an 18-year-old Tampa man separated from the vehicle as he drove along Gandy Boulevard eastbound, authorities said. This caused his SUV to drive across the median and in front of a car with four people inside on westbound Gandy. When the vehicles slammed into each other, a 47-year-old grandfather and his 14-day-old grandchild were thrown from the car, officials said.

The grandfather died at the crash location, troopers said.

Authorities said the baby was seated properly in the car seat, which is why he only suffered minor injuries. The 22-year-old parents who were in the same car with the grandfather and baby experienced minor injuries. The 18-year-old driver also experienced minor injuries.

Gandy Boulevard westbound near Oak Street Northeast was closed as authorities investigated the crash.

Gandy Boulevard westbound lanes are closed near Brighton Bay due to a fatal car crash that occurred Saturday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said two cars were involved, and one person is dead. Authorities are asking drivers to seek alternate routes.
