ICYMI: Heroic Deputy Saves Girl During 1st Day on the Job
The 4-year-old was choking to death when the Volusia County officer stepped in with lifesaving measures.

A brand new deputy in Volusia County is being heralded as a hero after he stepped in and saved a choking 4-year-old girl.
The incident unfolded over the weekend as Deputy Brant Lickiss was working his first full-time shift, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported on its Facebook page. Lickiss was riding patrol in the Deltona area when he spotted a woman as she pulled quickly into a driveway, jumped out of her car and began to pull her 4-year-old daughter out of the backseat.
“The little girl was turning pale, and appeared to be choking,” the post read.

“After several strikes, he dislodged a large piece of hard candy from her airway,” the sheriff’s office reported.
Volusia County paramedics checked the child out after Lickiss’ lifesaving measures. Before too long both she and her mother were on their way and Lickiss returned to his first full-time shift.
“I guess it was just instinct that made me do something to help,” Lickiss was quoted by the Daytona Beach News-Journal as saying, adding that thinking of his own daughter sparked the life-saving instinct.
“I got into law enforcement to help, to help anyone that’s in need,” he told the paper.
