Kids And Kubs Mark 90th Year At Annual Dinner

Over 100 players' spouses and friends gathered at the St. Pete Yacht Club on Saturday, Feb. 1. The dinner is an annual event

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — More than 100 players' spouses and friends gathered at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on Saturday, February 1st, 2020. The dinner is an annual affair. The event took on special meaning this year as it marks the 90th year of existence for the Kids and Kubs has a softball club. The occasion featured a buffet dinner, music provided by a DJ along with speaker Peter Golenbock, a well-known author of several New York Times bestsellers dealing with sport near and dear to many in the audience.

Club President Jon Wilkerson, serving his ninth year as president of the Three-Quarter Century Softball Club (aka. Kids and Kubs), acted as host of the evening's program. Recognizing many in the audience for the role in preserving the Club’s legacy as the oldest continuous senior softball club in the nation.

During the evening and after dinner members of the Club danced to the music of the ’50s,‘60s. Additional activities included a 50/50 raffle and door prizes.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a 90th Anniversary Commemoration and History of the Kids and Kubs entitled 90 Years and Still Playing. The title page features a 1933 picture of Babe Ruth Day with the “sultan of swat” greeting Club member. Authored by Club member Wil Michaels, the publication features stories, statistics, and photos along the historic road to 90 years.

The evening arrived at the ninth inning with a reminder to all in the audience about the legacy represented in the history behind the Club and, more importantly, the continuation into the next decade. There is a time capsule in front of the North Shore ball field awaiting the year 2030 when it will be opened by many who represent today’s younger older generation.
