Second Case of Chikungunya Confirmed in St. Pete Area

The Florida Department of Health confirmed a second case of Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus, in Pinellas County Tuesday. 

There have been 81 confirmed cases of Chikungunya in Florida in 2014.

Health officials say the illness is transmitted by the same mosquito that carries dengue fever.

The illness can cause high fever, joint pain and fatigue.

Chikungunya is not carried person-to-person.

Infected persons are advised to stay away from others while they are ill.

The Florida health department advises to remove standing water from immediately outside dwellings and use of mosquito repellent when outdoors — a good note during Florida's rainy season.
