Southeastern Guide Dogs' Walkathon Set for February

The annual event raises money for the internationally accredited guide dog school.

Organizers of an upcoming 3K event are hoping Tampa Bay area residents are up for helping a good cause and a few pairs of paws.

The Southeastern Guide Dogs’ Walkathon is set for Feb. 28 at St. Petersburg’s Viony Park. Sponsored by Publix, the annual event is the nonprofit organization’s single biggest fundraiser of the year.

“Our 3K Walkathon appeals to the whole family, with a beautiful setting, food, music, and pet-friendly shopping,” Richard Campbell, walkathon chair, was quoted in a media release as saying. “But what sets this Walkathon apart is the fact that you can bring your dog.”

The nonprofit Palmetto-based school provides guide dogs to visually impaired people at no cost.

The walkathon is open to individuals, teams and families willing to raise money for the cause. Those who raise at least $5,000 earn the right to name a puppy.

“It’s amazing to watch friends and neighbors come together to support Southeastern Guide Dogs,” Titus Herman, CEO, was quoted in the release as saying. “We’re thrilled that St. Petersburg is such a caring and compassionate community. Because of your generosity, we can continue offering our dogs and services at no cost.”

Anyone interested in joining the walk, can visit its website to sign up, start raising money or support other Walkathon teams. This year’s walk will also include a chance drawing with a $10,000 grand prize on the line. The grand-prize drawing will be held April 20, with a $1,000 drawing on the day of the walkathon. Tickets are available to walkathon participants to sell.

This year’s event begins at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 28 at the park. The walk kicks off at 11 a.m.
