Jobs: Find Out About Utility Careers At St. Pete College

The upcoming event at St. Petersburg College is meant to help those interested in utility careers explore the options.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Demand for skilled trade workers is at an all-time high, and St. Petersburg College is looking to help point people toward careers in relevant industries.

St. Petersburg College will host a career exploration event for public utility fields on Tuesday, May 17 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the St. Petersburg College Seminole Campus Conference Center, 9200 113th St. N., Seminole.

Attendees can learn about current and future career opportunities and training requirements, salary expectations, scholarship opportunities as well as networking opportunities with local municipalities, educators and members of public works-related professional organizations. The event will also feature several information sessions about career planning, water treatment and distribution and other relative topics to the industry.

There is a need for workers with a wide range of skills and interest in the public utilities industry in the areas of:

  • Utility administration (leadership, compliance, public relations, data management, project management, reporting, accounting/finance, etc.)
  • Water and Wastewater treatment
  • Collection and distribution systems (pipelines and pumping stations)
  • Electrical/mechanical maintenance and repair
  • Computer/control systems programming, maintenance and repair, information technology
  • Professional consulting (engineering, hydrogeology, economics, environmental science, etc.)

Participants in the career exploration event include the Public Works Academy at Pinellas Technical Education College, St. Petersburg College, American Water Works Association, Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association, American Public Works Association, Southwest Florida Water Management District, and the cities of Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Oldsmar, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Pinellas County.
