St. Pete Rapper Dangeruss Featured On 'Spring Breakers' Soundtrack

The Tampa Bay-area filmed Spring Breakers is not shying away from touting St. Petersburg and area beach towns in the film, and it's doing the same in its soundtrack.

Fan site SpringBreakersFilm.com released the line-up of the film's soundtrack, and it turns out that one song featuring James Franco has a heavy connection to St. Pete. It's called "Hangin’ With Da Dopeboy," rapped by Dangeruss, who grew up in St. Pete

Online publications are saying this is a song and a rapper to watch. Franco told GQ that he based his character Alien (pronounced Ale-leeeen) on the St. Pete resident:

"I would say the biggest influence on the role was this local Florida rapper named Dangerous [sic]. He's fairly unknown, but he was down there in the place, living the life, and he became the biggest model for me and he's in the movie."

Franco actually directed Dangeruss's music video for the song, too (and needless to say, this video is a strong R, and Not Suitable For Work). The music video also features scenes around St. Pete and southern Pinellas County as Dangeruss is a St. Petersburg native.

Who is Dangeruss? Complex Music talked to the local resident recently:

"Russ “Dangeruss” Curry grew up on the south side of St. Petersburg, a predominantly black area known for high crime and a lack of opportunity. Danger, as he's known to his friends, compares it to “the bad parts of Chicago and Miami and New Orleans.” His father left when he was young, and his mother was often absent. “She had her vices, so to speak,” he says. He and his brother were raised by his grandmother, who became ill when he was sixteen. “I became man of the house, you know,” he says. “As far as taking over everything, paying bills, so on and so forth...I got caught up in the streets making good money, and music became secondary."

He became a local star only recently, with the minor viral success of his street hit “My Fork” and his partially-self-produced mixtape, Armed and Dangeruss. The song, named for a key utensil in the crack-mixing process, attracted more attention locally: “It was to the point I was going to shows and people were coming to the shows with forks."

Fan website, springbreakersfilm.com, also revealed more details about the movie, including the music. Some listeners could recognize the Skrillex electronica music in the previews with the high-pitched scratching, alarming sound, but it turns out that Skrillex and Cliff Martinez scored the film.

It's interesting through all of that, a pop hit like "Lights" by Ellie Goulding thrown on that soundtrack among all the other rough stuff. 

Also, if the first trailer released for Spring Breakers didn't look dark enough, then the latest trailer for the Tampa Bay area movie certainly delivers as well as.

A new trailer released Feb. 27 shows more bubble parties, cars on fires, Hollywood starlets wielding assault weapons in hand and James Franco yelling "gangsta" through his shiny grill. The movie is due out in theaters March 22. It also stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel & Harmony Korine.

This new sneak peak is in addition to the red band rated R trailer (Not Suitable For Work) featuring bong hits, lines of cocaine just to name a few. And the movie isn't shy of disguising the location. The official Twitter account, @SpringBreakers, lists St. Petersburg, Florida as its location.

However, spring break doesn't tend to be that wild on the Gulf Coast. That's left to Daytona Beach, South Florida and Key West. Will this movie bring some wild childs to Siesta Key and St. Pete Beach?
