Structural Damage Causes Closure Of I-175 Overpass In St. Pete

Structural damage to the Interstate 175 overpass has resulted in the closure of the overpass near 5th Avenue South.

Correction: The structural damage was on the I-175 overpass, not the I-275 overpass in St. Petersburg.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Structural damage to the Interstate 175 overpass has resulted in the closure of the overpass near 5th Avenue South. Additionally, 6th Street South, where rubble has rained down on the road, is closed.

According to St. Petersburg Police, a large truck traveling on 6th Street South hit the Interstate 175 overpass and caused some concrete to fall.

Florida Department of Transportation bridge engineers are still on scene assessing the damage. There is structural damage to the concrete bridge beams. 6th Street South in St. Petersburg, both northbound and southbound, will remain closed under I-175 until the two beams are replaced. The left lane of eastbound I-175 will reopen this afternoon.

Drivers should find another route.
