Tarpon Springs Playground Closing For Repairs

The Discovery Playground will close on June 17.

The City of Tarpon Springs will temporarily close Discovery Playground while the site undergoes repairs, according to a statement from the city.

The playground is located at the Tarpon Springs Sports Complex, 150 Jasmine Ave. The closure will extend from June 17 through July 17.

The city approved more than $160,000 in renovations to the playground in April. The playground was constructed in 1997.

Among the biggest renovations will be the removal of the majority of the wooden play area. The city plans to replace it with plastic and recycled composite materials. The entrance to the park will also be moved and the tot lot (for kids ages 2-5) will be at the front of the 10,000-square-foot playground, according to the plan.

Some of the wood at the playground will be restored and sealed, making it safer for play. A highlight of the project is that the contractor will be building much of the new playground as opposed to using pre-manufactured materials.
