APD Zone 2: Thefts from and of Vehicles Ruin Some Victims' Week

Many thefts from vehicles could have been prevented last week.

More people in the Atlanta police department's Zone 2 were victims of theft from their vehicles parked at home, at work or outside businesses from Nov. 10-16.

Of the 87 crimes reported, 34 were for larceny from autos. Six iPads, six laptops, a couple of iPhones, four purses – and even two guns – were taken from cars parked in the Buckhead area. The numbers might be higher on these items, as a large number of the reports in the weekly list merely said "property" was taken.

It wasn't always difficult for thieves to make off with someone else's property. At least one car was left unlocked, windows were down in a few and in most cases the stolen items were in plain sight.

Seven vehicles were stolen during the week. One of the thieves just didn't return a rental car when it was due to be returned.

Shoplifiting from local stores was rough enough for the businesses, with 11 reports of larceny made. But four people were victims of having their purse, wallet or iPad stolen right out of their shopping cart.

Showing that it can be tough to trusty anyone, one victim lost $1,500 to her ride, who took off with the cash she left in the car while she stepped inside a convenience store.

And you're not necessarily safe when giving a ride, either. Two cab drivers collected no fare for a few passengers who refused to pay once the ride was over.
