Atlanta Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal Shooting on James P. Brawley Drive

The shooting death occurred on Dec. 20 after a verbal altercation.

Atlanta police have arrested a suspect in a fatal shooting outside of an apartment building on James P. Brawley Drive.

The suspect in an Atlanta man's shooting death was arrested late Friday night by Atlanta police department Fugitive and Zone 1 Field Investigation Team officers.

Erskine Gater, 54, of Atlanta, was charged with murder, posssession of a firearm during commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held in the Fulton County Jail.

On Dec. 20, Atlanta officers responded to a 911 call that someone at 603 James P. Brawley Drive had been shot. They found an unresponsive man on the walkway to the apartment building at that address. He had been shot in the chest and died at the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing a verbal altercation and then heard a gunshot. They found the victim in front of the apartments. The man has been identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office as 27-year-old Antwan Clay of Fairburn Road, Atlanta.

Homicide investigators, led by Investigator E. Johnson, also responded to the scene.
