Atlanta Streetcar Opens to Passengers Dec. 30

The long-awaited Atlanta streetcar system is expected to become operational Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The Atlanta streetcar, a form of public transportation not seen around town since 1949, is expected to open for passenger service Dec. 30.

The $98 million, four-car streetcar system will transport passengers for free along the 2.7-mile route during the first three months of service, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said in a statement Tuesday. After that, fares will be $1, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The project was originally planned to open in spring of 2013 after breaking ground in 2012. A grand opening celebration will take place Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Woodruff Park Streetcar stop.
