Atlanta Youth Rugby Hosts Free Clinic in Buckhead

BUCKHEAD, GA — Children and teens, ages 6-16, in Buckhead, are invited to attend a free rugby clinic this Sunday, Nov 3. Hosted by Atlanta Youth Rugby, the open day will take place at Windsor Parkway Fields, 940 Windsor Parkway from 1:30 - 4 p.m. New and experienced players are welcome. This is the team’s second year.

The organization aims to bring rugby to children across Atlanta with the goal of building character and athleticism, all while “fostering sportsmanship and community in a fun, safe and inclusive environment,” according to a news release.

On Sunday, the young attendees will receive instruction and guidance from the Atlanta Youth Rugby staff and coaches. The clinic is non-contact, but players will be active. They’re encouraged to wear cleats and athletic attire. Mouth guards and specific rugby clothing is not required.

The co-ed clinic is for all levels of experience, said program director, Rebecca Martin. The season runs from November through the middle of March.

“We’re expecting about 100 kids to come back this season, and they usually bring a friend,” she said. “All are welcome and there aren’t any tryouts, they just register online.”

Players between ages six and 10 don’t incorporate tackle techniques into the game, said Martin. “They play what’s called ‘Flag and Tag Rugby,’ so no contact because we want them to learn all aspects of the sport. Tackling is only about 15 percent of rugby.”

The interest has been growing in Atlanta, said Martin, who added that the more it grows, the more they’ll expand to other communities.

Sunday’s welcome clinic will give new players and families an opportunity to learn more about rugby, meet the coaches and community organizers. Returning players will meet new players and receive their season’s kit. The registration fee is $325 for the season.

Throughout November, Atlanta Youth Rugby will host open days in different communities in Atlanta. All events are co-ed.
