ATLANTA -- Police on Wednesday identified the man killed in the deadly Buckhead drive-by shooting.

Brandon Hamilton, 43, died early Sunday morning after being shot and subsequently crashing the car he was driving into a tree, Atlanta Police said. A 28-year-old woman was in the car with Hamilton, but only suffered minor injuries associated with the wreck, police said.

Around 2:30 a.m., investigators say Hamilton had pulled into a turning lane on Sidney Marcus Boulevard in Buckhead when another car pulled alongside the Rolls Royce he was driving and opened fire, according to reports from Fox5 News.

As he attempted to get away from the shooter, Hamilton collided with a tree near a shopping plaza on Piedmont Road, police said. He suffered several gunshot wounds, authorities said.

The incident adds to the uptick in crime that has led business and community members to begin efforts to increase security in Buckhead. Others, however, point to the shooting as further reason to consider seceding from the City of Atlanta.

Investigators told Fox5 News that there was likely only one shooter, and that footage from surveillance cameras in the area was collected to identify the shooter’s vehicle and license plate.

Police continue to investigate.
