Why is it Important to Have a Therapist on Your Wellness Team?

How Psychotherapy Can Help You Stop Self-Sabotaging and Help You Meet Your Health and Fitness Goals.

You work out twice a week with a trainer, but you binge eat late at night. You eat clean at meals but your stress level causes you to eat junk food at work. You get into a good healthy routine, but inevitably, you somehow end up crashing and burning. What do all of these situations have in common? Self-sabotage. How do you combat self-sabotage? You combat it by addressing your core thoughts and beliefs about yourself. A good psychotherapist can help you identify your errant beliefs and can help you reframe them in a healthier way. There is no exercise or eating regime that can overcome negative core beliefs.

Negative, harsh or critical self-talk could be the thing that's holding you back. Self-talk is that internal conversation that we have with ourselves. Is your self talk kind and gentle and loving? If you have a cookie instead of an apple, do you berate yourself internally and trigger shame? Shame is so toxic, and is one of our biggest barriers to progress. It's paralyzing. Instead of criticism, we need the internal talk to sound like an encouraging cheerleader. We need for our internal "self" to be on our team, not to feel like the enemy. Many people are not aware of how their own thoughts can negatively impact their goals.

Psychotherapy can help change that internal harshness and help you to change your internal feelings about yourself. It can help support your nutrition and your workout plan. It can help you once and for all make changes that will last a lifetime. If you have tried and tried again to develop a healthy lifestyle and have failed, you may want to have a conversation with a Licensed therapist to support you in reaching your goals for permanent lifestyle change.
