2018 Kindergarten Class

Special Group

The IKES Kindergarten class of 2018 is a special group of students. The majority of them were born during the school year the building first opened, 2011-2012. They will be the high school senior graduating class of 2030.

When their parents were still in high school or college this part of Cherokee County was an idyllic rural landscape. The area one mile east of exit 16 on I-575 (Highway 140 East/Hickory Flat Highway) consisted of one subdivision, a gas station, and a developing neighborhood. Since 2001, homes, restaurants, and businesses have popped up like mushrooms, along with a new state-of-the-art hospital and a medical building.

I purchased my new home in the developing neighborhood 17 years ago, when you could still see the meteor showers in the clear night sky, unencumbered by manmade illumination.

We have long since lost that heavenly view, but I can’t complain. I am part of the problem, one of the many transplants who wanted to build a life in a county full of potential and natural beauty.

In the time since I moved here, I became a proud “Granny Nanny” of a member of the special IKES Kindergarten class of 2018. It’s comforting to know he can attend a great school just two miles from our home, with outstanding middle and high schools a mere five miles away.
