BOC To Consider Temporary Moratorium On Sign Permits

Commissioners will hold a called meeting on Wednesday to consider the move, which would give staff time to review its sign ordinance.

Cherokee County commissioners on Wednesday will hold a called meeting to consider imposing a temporary moratorium on issuing permits relating to its sign ordinance.

The called meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. June 24 at the Cherokee County Administrative Complex.

If approved, the moratorium would allow county staff to review its ordinance in light of last week’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

According to NPR, justices last week struck down a Gilbert, Arizona, sign ordinance and “issued a broad new constitutional mandate requiring the highest standard of proof to justify differing limits on signage.”

The issue stemmed from the city imposing limits onto a church regarding temporary signs it placed around town providing directions to events, NPR reported.
